Resuscitating the Dying Autopsy

چکیده
• Despite the relevant information that postmortem examinations can provide, autopsy rates have been declining worldwide in the last few decades. • Autopsies are especially necessary in low-income countries, where reliable information on cause of death is much more limited and in vivo clinical diagnosis is hampered by the scarce availability of diagnostic tools. • The use of the autopsy or of robust substitutes for this procedure needs to be encouraged as a mechanism for the continuous improvement of clinical diagnosis and as a complement for cause-of-death investigation and surveillance.

Autopsy and Histopathological Analysis of 28 Cases of Traumatic Brainstem Haemorrhages
Background: Brainstem hemorrhage was first described by Cheyne in 1812 in a pathological study of patients presenting with lethargy and coma. In 1877 Bode reviewed the findings of 67 patients reported in the literature (1). In the United States, the incidence of closed head injury is estimated to be approximately 200 cases per 100,000 persons per year. The financial burden of head injuries in...
متن کاملCerebral hemorrhagic infarction at autopsy: cardiac embolic cause and the relationship to the cause of death.
In 48 patients dying within 15 days following a supra-tentorial cerebral infarct, the presence of hemorrhagic infarction at autopsy was related to a cardiac embolic cause of the infarct, and to the cause of death. Hemorrhagic infarcts were more common among patients dying from brain herniation than among those dying from a non-cerebral cause. Cardiac embolic strokes were more often hemorrhagic ...
متن کاملAcute coronary findings at autopsy in heart failure patients with sudden death: results from the assessment of treatment with lisinopril and survival (ATLAS) trial.
BACKGROUND Sudden unexpected death frequently occurs in chronic heart failure. The importance of acute coronary events in triggering sudden death (SD) is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS We evaluated at autopsy the prevalence of acute coronary findings (coronary thrombus, ruptured plaque, or myocardial infarction [MI]) and their relation to SD. Autopsy results in 171 patients in the randomized AT...
متن کاملAutopsy after death due to extreme prematurity.
Autopsy reports for 29 very preterm infants dying at <28 days of age were reviewed. New findings were discovered in 79% and resulted in a significant change in diagnoses in 28%. Iatrogenic lesions were identified in 41% of cases and were the main cause of death in 14%.
متن کاملCytomegalovirus Pneumonitis in AIDS Patients
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonitis is a common complication of AIDS. With the development of potentially effecfive drug therapy, the indications for treatment and best means of diagnosis have become issues of practical importance. We reviewed the clinical records and autopsy material from 54 patients dying with AIDS, 39 (72 percent) of whom had CMV infection documented postmortem by culture and ...
